Elastic Acquires Yunqi Capital Seed-Backed Jina AI to Jointly Accelerate Search AI Infrastructure Evolution | Yunqi Capital
Driving Open-Source AI Infrastructure Toward a Global Ecosystem

Recently, Elastic (NYSE: ESTC), a global leader in search infrastructure, announced its acquisition of Jina AI.
Going forward, Elastic and Jina AI will jointly advance the development of open models for vector models, rerankers, and small models in the search AI space, as well as academic research. New Jina AI models will be distributed through Elastic's inference and search platform, delivering optimal search quality to Elastic customers.

Founded in 2020, Jina AI is a leading search AI company. Yunqi Capital was its sole institutional investor in the seed round — the first to back the company — and has continued to invest in subsequent rounds. In June this year, the company released its multimodal embedding model Jina Embeddings V4, with 3.8 billion parameters and the first to achieve synchronous processing of text and images, dubbed "the fourth-generation model built for search."
Following the acquisition, Jina AI's former CEO Han Xiao will serve as VP of AI at Elastic, responsible for AI strategy and R&D. The core Jina team led by Xiao will continue advancing search AI across vector models, rerankers, Reader, and small models. P.S. In February this year, we joined Dr. Xiao on a podcast to discuss the AI ecosystem amid the DeepSeek boom — click here for more of his views on AI search.)

Han Xiao, Founder of Jina AI, VP of AI at Elastic
At Jina AI, we focused on building foundational models for search, hoping to help the world unlock the enormous potential of multimodal AI and revolutionize how we interpret and interact with information. Partnering with Elastic allows us to inject these cutting-edge capabilities directly into Elasticsearch — the core engine that processes massive volumes of mission-critical searches every day. We're incredibly excited to combine Jina AI's models with Elastic's vast platform and ecosystem to help developers build faster, more precise AI experiences.
I'm thrilled to welcome the entire Jina AI team aboard. Together, we'll build the world's premier search and AI platform, and we look forward to sharing the remarkable results of our collaboration.
Yu Chen, Partner at Yunqi Capital
We led Jina AI's seed round as its sole investor from day one and have continued to support its growth. Over the years, the Jina AI team evolved from an initial focus on neural search to embedding models in the large model era, surpassing numerous closed-source models in capability and demonstrating exceptional technical insight and execution.
This acquisition by Elastic is not only a validation of Jina's technical accumulation, but also represents the accelerating convergence of open-source ecosystems and generative AI. We've always believed that outstanding technical entrepreneurs can build global connections, engage with the world through open source, and prove their value through products.

Recently, Elastic (NYSE: ESTC) officially announced its completion of the Jina AI acquisition, aimed at further strengthening its technical capabilities and product depth in search AI. The news was announced on Elastic's website on October 9, marking the beginning of deep collaboration between the two parties on key foundational capabilities including open-source retrieval technology, vector models, and small language models.
Jina AI has been an industry pioneer in open-source multimodal, multilingual embedding, reranking, and small language models. The team has demonstrated strong engineering capabilities in areas such as multilingual long-document processing and visual document retrieval.
In its announcement, Elastic stated that this acquisition will significantly enhance its search relevance and real-time inference capabilities. Going forward, models developed by Jina AI will be integrated into Elastic's inference platform and deployed seamlessly through Elastic Cloud, enabling enterprise users to efficiently build intelligent retrieval systems for multimodal data.
In this transaction, Jina AI's former CEO Han Xiao will join Elastic as VP of AI, fully responsible for Elastic's AI strategy formulation and core technology R&D. The original team will also be integrated into Elastic, continuing to deepen their work on vector models and embedded search capabilities.
Elastic Chief Product Officer Ken Exner noted that Jina's technical accumulation will substantially enhance the Elastic Search AI platform's capabilities in enterprise search, analytics, and RAG applications — particularly in complex document structures and multilingual data processing, where Jina has industry-leading performance.
Going forward, Jina will continue to uphold its open-source spirit, making its model capabilities available in open-source form through Elastic Cloud inference services, empowering more developers and enterprises to accelerate the building of intelligent retrieval applications and driving open-source AI infrastructure toward a global ecosystem.
