China's First: PingCAP's Distributed Database TiDB Passes CAICT HTAP Database Basic Capability Assessment | Yunqi Tech π
Leading the frontier of databases

"Yunqi Tech π" shares updates from Yunqi Capital's portfolio companies, exploring how cutting-edge technology expands the boundaries of real-world applications and tracking the present and future of tech commercialization. In this edition of "Yunqi Tech π," we bring you the latest on PingCAP, which Yunqi led at Series A.
➤➤➤ As the digital economy rapidly evolves, data has become a critical production factor, and unlocking its value is now a universal priority for users. HTAP (Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing) is an emerging database architecture designed to break down the barriers between transaction processing and analytics. It enables real-time analysis on the same dataset used for transactional processing, with flexible resource allocation between the two workloads so that online transactions and analytics run without interference and can each scale linearly. This one-stop approach addresses enterprise application needs while dramatically reducing costs and accelerating decision-making. HTAP has become one of the most advanced frontiers in database development.
On December 15–16, 2022, in the 15th round of database product capability evaluations organized by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), PingCAP's distributed database TiDB became the first product in China to complete and pass the HTAP database foundational capability assessment. The evaluation was conducted against the Big Data — Hybrid Transactional and Analytical Database Technical Requirements standard, which covers six capability domains and 41 capability items — 35 mandatory and 6 optional — spanning HTAP databases' basic functionality, reliability, operational management, scalability, security, and usability.
TiDB, the distributed database evaluated in this round, is a converged distributed database product developed by PingCAP that simultaneously supports online transaction processing and online analytical processing. Its key features include horizontal scaling, financial-grade high availability, real-time HTAP, cloud-native architecture, and compatibility with MySQL 5.7 protocol and the MySQL ecosystem. It aims to provide users with a one-stop solution for OLTP, OLAP, and HTAP. TiDB is well-suited for scenarios requiring high availability, strong consistency, and large data scale. It has become one of the most active open-source database projects globally and has consistently ranked first on the Modb (墨天轮) China Database Popularity Ranking. To date, TiDB serves over 3,000 enterprise users worldwide across industries including finance, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, internet, and government.

Yunqi led PingCAP's Series A round in 2016 and has continued to invest in subsequent rounds. For years, Yunqi has remained focused on "technology innovation, industrial enablement." Open source and infrastructure software are among its sustained areas of focus. Beyond PingCAP, Yunqi made early leading investments in Zilliz, Jina AI, RisingWave, and other industry leaders. It has also been invited to share commercial perspectives at major global industry summits including the Amazon Web Services Summit, China Open Source Conference, VMware Edge Open Source Summit, and Huawei Partner & Developer Conference.
Yunqi has actively advanced open-source development over the past year. In early 2022, Yunqi partnered with Kaiyuanshe (开源社), China's most influential open-source community, to release the 2021 China Open Source Annual Report, presenting a multi-dimensional picture of domestic open-source development. The 2022 China Open Source Annual Report is also forthcoming — stay tuned.
