A Day in the Life of 27 Professions | FreeS Fund May Day Special
Happy Labor Day — thank you for your work.
The pandemic keeps coming in waves, and it's hard not to feel weighed down by it all. One internet joke captures the mood: "Youth only lasts so many years — the pandemic ate three of them."
Even so, working people across every industry keep showing up for their jobs as always, contributing what they can to keep society running through this extraordinary stretch. Delivery drivers, restaurant owners, medical workers, volunteers... it's because of this collective effort and mutual understanding that things have held together, more or less.
At FreeS Fund, our portfolio spans all kinds of sectors. We tend to track these companies through the lens of trends and market opportunities, and we pay close attention to the founders and leadership teams behind them.
But behind those leaders and founding teams stands the accumulated contribution of every single person in the organization, top to bottom. On the clock, they're CEOs, engineers, designers, community managers, factory workers. Off duty, they're parents, children, pet owners, volunteers, home cooks, themselves.
When we see them, the company stops being a symbol or a row of numbers. It becomes a tapestry of vivid, intersecting lives.
So for this year's May Day special, we invited people from 16 portfolio companies, representing 27 different roles, to capture moments from an ordinary day on camera. Through their footage, we saw 27 different ways of living with intention.
Some run precision experiments at work, then treat themselves to good food and supermarket strolls afterward. Some have settled into remote work routines and even spend spare hours volunteering in their residential compounds, helping neighbors out. Some craft handmade false eyelashes with meticulous care, lighting up at a single compliment from a customer. Some spend their days surrounded by cement dust yet wear easy, hearty smiles. Some travel constantly for construction projects, and during the pandemic can only squeeze in a video call with their young children after clocking out...
We've stitched these moments together to share with you on the other side of the screen. Right now, these seemingly ordinary, everyday scenes are themselves an act of courage — finding joy amid hardship.
Happy Labor Day. To everyone out there, living with effort.
