How Should Startups Design a Compensation System? Here's a Chance to Get the *2017 Early-Stage Enterprise Compensation Survey Report*

峰瑞资本峰瑞资本·July 5, 2017

Manage the "people" and the "money."

Entrepreneurship isn't just about the various "sharing" models right in front of us — it's also about the dream of building great companies and the horizon beyond.

Statistics show that the number of early-stage enterprises and entrepreneurs in China has reached the millions. With rapid technological advancement and constant business model innovation, nearly six new internet companies are founded in China every day. That these early-stage companies can fight their way through the gauntlet isn't simply because they've caught a "tailwind." Building real capabilities and unlocking greater talent potential are what matter more.

Last November, Mercer partnered with FreeS Fund and six other top-tier VC firms, along with multiple partners, to release the 2016 Early-Stage Enterprise Compensation Survey Report — the first report in China focused on compensation at internet early-stage companies. For the first time, it comprehensively covered cash compensation, long-term incentives, employee benefits, and organizational effectiveness for internet early-stage companies, establishing an industry benchmark for HR management at China's internet early-stage enterprises.

The 2017 Early-Stage Enterprise Compensation Survey Report is coming your way soon. Compared with last year, the similarities are:

  • Still focused on how early-stage companies manage the two big things: "people" and "money"
  • Still covering the truly core development stages of internet early-stage companies (angel, Pre-A, A, A+, B, B+ rounds)
  • Still precise, simple, accessible, and practical — and most importantly, free!

Where it's different — and where things get more substantial and exciting:

  • More top-tier VC firms will join as co-publishers. We believe the thousands of early-stage companies they've invested in and incubated represent the most exemplary advanced cohort among China's early-stage enterprises;
  • More extension and breakthrough in the number of surveyed companies, coverage areas, and geographic scope. Beyond the seven sectors covered last year, this year's hottest areas — autonomous mobility, robotics, big data infrastructure, and the sharing economy — are all coming into the fold;
  • In addition to the standard compensation report for early-stage company management, we will partner with Tencent's professional internet industry trends research, case study, and data analysis arm "Tencent Penguin Intelligence" to release a version aimed at early-stage company employees. This employee-facing report will be more actionable, mapping out the "skill playbook" for frontline colleagues seeking higher pay for their roles, while also giving the most authentic feedback on long-term incentives, corporate culture, and management systems.
