Catering Supply Chain Leader Xinliangji Raises Another 300 Million RMB, FreeS Fund Continues to Follow

On July 20, 2019, Xinliangji Food Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. ("Xinliangji"), a leading enterprise in the catering supply chain sector, announced it had completed 300 million RMB in additional financing. This round was led exclusively by Sino-Ocean Capital, with Eastern Bell Capital and FreeS Fund participating.
Notably, this investment set a record for the largest financing amount in China's catering supply chain sector in 2019. It also marked the third time Xinliangji — founded just three years prior — had won capital market favor. In February 2017, Xinliangji raised 50 million RMB in a Pre-A round led by FreeS Fund; in July of the same year, Eastern Bell Capital led a 120 million RMB new round. This fully reflects the market's broad optimism for the development prospects of food supply chain enterprises represented by Xinliangji, driven by new retail and new logistics trends. FreeS Perspectives
▍Li Feng: Thank China's Manufacturing

China has manufacturing capacity that's hard to fathom — close to 70% of global production capacity for major consumer goods sits here. What we lack isn't redoing supply and production from scratch, but rather connecting user demand with quality supply to create new products. (Full report: [FreeS Fund] Why We Should Thank China's Manufacturing)
▍Li Feng: "Lower-Tier Markets" Are Just About Unlocking Demand — Talking Only About "Sinking" Is Meaningless
The most mass-market positioning — accessible to third-, fourth-, and fifth-tier cities without feeling cheap to first-, second-, and third-tier residents — captures the largest user base. McDonald's and KFC are examples: you don't feel low-end eating there, yet it's accessible to people in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-tier cities.
There's no such thing as a brand that exists only in lower-tier cities. In principle, it still needs to reach every market. Doing only lower-tier markets is very difficult. Put simply, if people in higher-tier cities won't use a brand, people in lower-tier cities will eventually abandon it too. (Full report: [ChinaVenture] Li Feng: "Lower-Tier Markets" Are Just About Unlocking Demand — Talking Only About "Sinking" Is Meaningless)
▍Huang Hai: Coffee in China Is Evolving from Social Experience to Daily Necessity
2018 was the year coffee officially became a basic consumption in China. The rapid growth of Luckin Coffee and Coffee Box through delivery channels that year was precisely the signal that coffee had become a daily consumer good. Consumers' "social need" to buy coffee and experience the space at Starbucks has weakened, replaced by coffee lovers and even addicts treating it as part of their daily routine.
Saturnbird Coffee's pricing strategy targets the mass market. Second, while everyone else was focused on delivery and brick-and-mortar stores, building a pure internet business turned out to be a blue ocean. Third, the product itself demonstrated strong technical innovation and packaging design. (For the full report, see: [Yicai] How Can Instant Coffee Upgrade Itself?)
▍Rui Ma: Waste Sorting Needs "New Forces" to Take Over
In 2017, when we invested in Aobag, our thesis was that front-end waste reduction and sorting were inevitable, and that this task needed to be handed to new players — a "new force" fundamentally different from traditional recycling stations.
Aobag seized on the critical factor: making waste sorting and recycling sustainable at low cost. Systemic change is now underway. In the future, companies capable of waste sorting may participate in parts of the sanitation system, or more likely, sell products and services to it — the latter being more probable because the barriers to entry in waste sorting are higher. Throughout this process, as public awareness builds, whether a brand can establish first-mover advantage also matters. (For the full report, see: [China Entrepreneur] The Waste Sorting Wind)
▍Xu Sun: Waste Sorting in China Has More Room for Marketization
In the US, waste sorting and disposal are already highly marketized: collection companies charge households based on volume, and pay landfills or incinerators by the ton upon delivery. In China, government still settles directly with sanitation companies and back-end processing firms. The underlying model follows PPP (public-private partnership), but greater marketization lies ahead. (For the full report, see: [China Business Journal] Waste Sorting Gains Traction; VCs Probe Trillion-Yuan Market)

Consumer | Three Squirrels Lists on Shenzhen Stock Exchange

On July 12, 2019, Three Squirrels successfully listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange under ticker 300783. The IPO price was 14.68 RMB, opening at 21.14 RMB on the first trading day — a 44.01% gain, with total market capitalization reaching 8.477 billion RMB.
For its listing celebration, Three Squirrels chose a down-to-earth "dai pai dong" (street food stall) setting. Founder "Squirrel Dad" delivered a new-era entrepreneurial manifesto:
In 2012, as e-commerce began transforming how people live, we decided to build an internet snack brand starting from nuts. Today, we have become a 10-billion-RMB brand spanning all snack categories, bringing joy to 100 million "masters"; In 2019, as digital technology prepares to transform society, we have decided to build a fully digital-driven enterprise, reconstructing supply chain and organization through digitization to ultimately close the distance between products and people; Over the next ten years, we will bring quality, affordable, fresh, diverse, and convenient joyful snacks to 200 million households. We firmly believe that with a digitalized supply chain, an IP-driven brand, and authentic squirrel culture, Three Squirrels will succeed. — Squirrel Dad, July 12, 2019

Perspectives from the FreeS Fund Family
▍Three Squirrels' Liaoyuan Zhang: The Next Decade, Driven by Digitalization, Achieving Supply Chain Pre-positioning and Organizational Efficiency

Looking at the snack industry from a macro perspective, it mainly comprises several ends: raw materials, manufacturing, distribution, connection, and demand. Currently the internet has only solved part of the problem — the distribution part between manufacturing and connection, meaning you place an order online and it ships from a logistics warehouse. But this solution remains incomplete.
I see several directions worth pursuing: first, scale advantages, which can reduce costs at the raw materials and manufacturing ends; second, high turnover advantages, which can reduce costs at the connection end between manufacturing and distribution, while also giving users a perception of freshness; third, flexibility advantages — not all products can achieve scale advantages, some simply won't grow large, and what they offer isn't cost advantage but flexibility. Cakes and nuts, for example, become more competitive the more you produce them.
We couldn't do this before because our business model lacked a digital tool. The connections between all these endpoints are incredibly complex, with countless processes in between. So if seven years ago we were playing the game of "new channels create new brands," then for the next decade, our focus will be on digital-driven supply chain pre-positioning and organizational efficiency. (Full report: [FreeS Fund] Li Feng in Conversation with Zhang Liaoyuan: Reflections on Three Squirrels' IPO)
▍Gong Huaze, MaiFei Technology: Chinese agriculture is at a critical inflection point, and technology is the key to meeting new demands

Against the backdrop of simultaneous mechanization and digitization, agricultural demand has evolved from simple production inputs (seeds, fertilizer, mechanized planting tools) to something far more complex. Beyond production inputs, digital information on soil, weather, and hydrology, as well as crop growth requirements, are becoming new growth drivers in agriculture.
Under the combined forces of shrinking agricultural labor, shifting national agricultural policy, and rising consumer expectations, large-scale farming will become an inevitable necessity. The capital requirements for large-scale farming far exceed those of fragmented operations, creating demand for agricultural financial services. The introduction of financial instruments, in turn, requires robust foundational data support — risk control models for agricultural scenarios are evolving from initial construction toward refinement.
Whether it's specialized guidance, digital information, or financial services, these represent new directions in agricultural demand, and the ultimate solution to these new demands is "technology." (Full report: [36Kr] Gong Huaze: An Era of Transition, MaiFei's Opportunity)
▍Wu Jun, Saturnbird Coffee: We're a product company, period

Some brands are built for service, some for distribution channels — we're built for product. The idea of designing our packaging as miniature coffee cups seems simple, but it took nearly six months of design work. The team had rejected dozens of packaging concepts, including pouches and capsules. The factory was about to commission a spherical mold when it suddenly hit me: the keyword is "authenticity." We needed to use the coffee cup's own shape to help users understand that this is, quite simply, a good cup of coffee. (Full report: [Yicai YiMagazine] How Can Instant Coffee Upgrade Itself?)
▍Wang Jianchao, Aobag Environmental: Using "Business + Administration" to Get Waste Sorting Right

When it comes to waste sorting, administrative power and market forces should have distinct roles — government uses administrative power to launch forceful short-term campaigns that capture society-wide attention; professional enterprises use market forces to help the public build normalized daily habits. You can't rely on a bunch of aunties (Shanghai's waste-sorting volunteers) standing next to trash bins every day to supervise. (Full report: [Gelonghui] Wang Jianchao: How to Break Into the Hundred-Billion-Yuan Waste Sorting Market Right Now)
▍Lei Shuyu, Feixin Electronics: In semiconductors, China has a shot at competing with global players

It's rare to find an integrated circuit field where China and the rest of the world are starting from the same line. Most of our products lag foreign counterparts by three to four decades — hard to catch up. In optical 3D modeling sensors, though, the world is basically at the same starting line. This is an opportunity we absolutely must seize. We have to get out front and build something that truly reaches international advanced standards, not just localize for the domestic market.
Moreover, automotive, mobile, security, and industrial applications are all civilian markets that aren't subject to international embargo. Being domestically leading means nothing — we have to build a world-leading company. (Full report: [Yanyuan Xiongxin] Lei Shuyu, Feixin Electronics: Challenging Myself Makes Me Happy)
▍Chen Su, DataPipeline: Three Changes Coming to Data Application Integration

Currently, most Chinese enterprises are still in the early stages of big data circulation, exchange, and utilization. The key reason is that they haven't done the foundational work of data integration, data cleansing, and data synchronization.
Going forward, data application integration will undergo three changes: first, it will become more complex compared to the past; second, it will require greater real-time performance; third, it will need high scalability and flexibility.
These three changes represent three major challenges in data usage, but they will also create new opportunities. (Full report: [DataPipeline] DataPipeline CTO Chen Su: We Spent 3 Years Redefining Data Integration)
