SeaTunnel Graduates! First Chinese-Led Data Integration Project Becomes Apache Top-Level Project | BlueRun Ventures

This milestone marks SeaTunnel's breakthrough in open-source software development.

Recently, the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) — the world's largest open-source software foundation — officially announced that Apache SeaTunnel has graduated to become an Apache Top-Level Project (TLP). This marks the first TLP in the big data integration domain led and contributed by Chinese developers, a milestone that recognizes SeaTunnel's breakthrough in open-source software development and its outstanding performance in technology, community collaboration, and open innovation.

SeaTunnel is the second Apache TLP under WhaleOps, a next-generation high-performance, distributed, massive-scale data integration tool that supports hundreds of data sources (Database/Cloud/SaaS), real-time CDC, and batch synchronization of海量 data, capable of stably and efficiently synchronizing trillions of records.

BlueRun Ventures was the seed and angel investor in WhaleOps. Congratulations to WhaleOps on reaching this new milestone.

Apache SeaTunnel was originally named Waterdrop; it was renamed SeaTunnel in October 2021 and applied to join the Apache Incubator. To date, Apache SeaTunnel has released 40+ versions and is deployed in production at numerous enterprises, including J.P. Morgan, ByteDance, Stey, China Mobile, Foxconn, Tencent Cloud, Gridsum, the Institute of Big Data Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 360, Shopee, Bilibili, SINA Corporation, Sogou, and VIP.com. It is widely used in scenarios such as massive heterogeneous data integration, CDC data synchronization, SaaS data integration, and multi-source data processing.

On December 9, 2021, Apache SeaTunnel officially became an Apache Incubator project with unanimous approval. Under the mentorship of Jean-Baptiste Onofré, Kevin Ratnasekera, Willem Ning Jiang, Ted Liu, Guo William, Zhenxu Ke, and Lidong Dai, it was guided and incubated by members of the Incubator Project Management Committee.

On May 17, 2023, the Apache Board passed the resolution for Apache SeaTunnel's graduation, concluding its 18-month incubation and formally establishing Apache SeaTunnel as an Apache Top-Level Project.

The Apache official blog published the news of Apache SeaTunnel's graduation:

About Apache SeaTunnel

Apache SeaTunnel is a next-generation high-performance, distributed, massive-scale data integration tool that supports hundreds of data sources (Database/Cloud/SaaS), real-time CDC, and batch synchronization of海量 data, capable of stably and efficiently synchronizing trillions of records.

Figure 2: Apache SeaTunnel technical architecture diagram

As an ultra-high-performance distributed data integration tool, Apache SeaTunnel's key features and advantages include:

  • Support for hundreds of data sources, with fast transmission speed and high accuracy;
  • Reduced complexity: API-based connectors are compatible with offline synchronization, real-time synchronization, full synchronization, incremental synchronization, CDC real-time synchronization, and other scenarios;
  • Ease of use: drag-and-drop and SQL-like interfaces save developers time, with visual job management, scheduling, execution, and monitoring capabilities, accelerating integration with low-code and no-code tools;
  • Ease of maintenance: supports standalone and cluster deployment; when deployed with the SeaTunnel Zeta engine, it requires no dependencies on big data components such as Spark or Flink.

In terms of community growth, during its incubation at the ASF, Apache SeaTunnel grew from tens of thousands of lines of code to 250,000 lines, with 2,920+ PRs created and 2,850+ PRs merged. Currently, SeaTunnel has 5.1k+ Stars on GitHub, a community of 5,000+ members, and 180+ contributors.

On the user side, Apache SeaTunnel is now widely adopted across industries including internet, finance, retail, mobility, smart home, and cloud services. In scenarios such as massive data integration, real-time heterogeneous data synchronization, data aggregation, and multi-source data consolidation, it can efficiently process data at the scale of tens of trillions of records.

Shopee DI supports massive volumes of data and numerous types of data ingestion, some of which involve diverse and rapidly changing long-tail demands. SeaTunnel enables us to respond quickly to these demands and allows users to create pipelines themselves, because it is so easy to use — this has bought us time to productize these demands. We also use SeaTunnel to continuously refactor and integrate existing features, which has improved our development efficiency and simplified code management.

—Wang Yang, Senior Data Engineer at Shopee

At Youzu Interactive, we need to ingest gaming business data into our data center in real time and migrate and transfer data between various storage systems in offline scenarios. Before adopting SeaTunnel, we used various real-time collection tools and offline migration tools — too many types of tools, difficult to maintain, and not stable enough. After introducing SeaTunnel, we improved the quality of our real-time ingestion tasks and reduced the maintenance costs of offline migration tools. Currently, we have migrated 80% of our real-time ingestion tasks and offline migration tasks to SeaTunnel.
