Recently, Aesion (Guangzhou) Biotech Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Aesion Medical) announced the completion of its angel funding round, led exclusively by Dalton Venture. The proceeds will be primarily used to advance clinical development of its small-diameter artificial blood vessel, as well as to expand applications of its core technology.

Aesion Medical was incubated by Hubei Zhongchuang Medical Products Co., Ltd. and began independent operations as a standalone company in 2023. As a specialized R&D and manufacturing enterprise in tissue repair and reconstruction, the company focuses on the development, production, and sales of high-end implantable medical devices. Aesion Medical maintains deep partnerships with Wuhan University of Technology and has established long-term collaborations with domestic clinical medical experts. Staying closely attuned to clinical needs, the company promotes physician-engineer collaboration and has built out a complete industry-academia-research-medicine value chain.

Artificial blood vessels are prosthetic devices used to replace human vessels, bypass graft between vessels, or create shunts. This market has long been dominated by imported products. Small-diameter artificial blood vessels have broad clinical applications, but material limitations have created numerous pain points in clinical scenarios such as vascular access construction for hemodialysis and coronary artery bypass grafting. Imported products are also generally expensive. Even though hemodialysis is now covered by medical insurance and end-stage renal disease patients are living longer — with the hemodialysis patient population continuing to grow — the clinical penetration rate of AVG (arteriovenous graft) surgery in China remains far below advanced international levels, and market demand is far from being met.

Leveraging its proprietary technology, Aesion Medical has developed its small-diameter artificial blood vessel to address these clinical pain points. The company has already established 10,000-class GMP workshops and advanced laboratories at the Zhongchuang Health Industrial Park in Wuhan's Jiangxia District, forming R&D, production, and testing capabilities, and is advancing clinical trials for its small-diameter artificial blood vessel.
