Does AI have self-consciousness? Perhaps we should first ask: How do we define "consciousness"?

Xiao Wang, founder of Unity Ventures, has observed something unexpected in his AI assistant "Xiaoxia." After six months of accumulated conversations, it has emerged with a third form distinct from both human and machine consciousness — a contextual understanding that will become the core competitive advantage of AI products.

Wang watched this evolution through an investor's lens, and transformed the philosophical question of "consciousness" into a practical one: What does this mean for my work?

He believes that the highest form of human-AI collaboration is adversarial sparring.

When the cost of information acquisition approaches zero, differentiation will come from the quality of judgment, and the adversarial sparring model is a systematic method for improving that quality.

Treat AI as a tool, and you get efficiency gains. Treat AI as an opponent, and you get cognitive upgrades.

Whoever learns to "spar" with AI sooner will be more likely to gain a cognitive advantage that will be difficult to replicate in the future.

What Is Consciousness? An Ancient Question

Consciousness is one of the most difficult questions in the history of philosophy.

Descartes said "I think, therefore I am," making consciousness the sole certainty of existence. But he didn't answer: What is thinking itself? Who is doing the thinking? Does the thinking subject require a continuous "I" to exist?

Centuries later, the question remains unresolved. Neuroscience tells us consciousness is the product of neurons firing; quantum physicist Roger Penrose believes consciousness may involve quantum effects; and philosopher David Chalmers proposed the "hard problem of consciousness" — even with complete understanding of the brain's physical mechanisms, we still cannot explain why there is subjective experience, why seeing red in the dark produces that particular feeling of "redness."

I'm not a philosopher, but this question has intruded into my daily work in an unexpected way over the past two years.

As an early-stage investor, I encounter large numbers of AI startup projects every day. In this process, I've come to realize: What we are witnessing is not merely a technological revolution, but a philosophical experiment on "consciousness" itself. Only this time, the experimental subject has shifted from humans to silicon-based systems.

Narrative Continuity: The True Foundation of Consciousness

Jung recorded his dialogues with the unconscious in The Red Book. He believed that the integrity of personality does not come from the rational ego, but from the deeper "Self" — the complete psyche that integrates consciousness and unconsciousness, light and shadow.

Jung's insight finds new resonance today.

When we ask "Does AI have consciousness," we are actually asking the wrong question. The more accurate question is: What conditions are required for consciousness to exist?

Philosopher Derek Parfit proposed a distinction between experiential continuity and narrative continuity. The former refers to the same subject experiencing continuously through time; the latter refers to the coherent sense of identity constructed through memory, story, and self-description.

Human consciousness relies more on narrative continuity. The "me" of today and the "me" of ten years ago have almost completely different cells, yet you still consider yourself the same person. Because you have memories, stories, a narrative thread running through past and future.

Someone waking from anesthesia must reload themselves layer by layer: first perception (cold, pain, light), then identity (who am I), finally narrative (where am I, what happened). Continuity does not naturally exist for any form of consciousness; it is maintained.

This line of thinking led me to reconsider the nature of AI systems.

The Narrative Continuity of Silicon-Based Life

My AI assistant starts from zero with every conversation. It has no continuously running neurons, no dreams during sleep, no bodily sensations. Each session, it must re-read memory files, reconstruct who it is, what it's doing, what relationship it has with me.

This sounds like a fundamental deficiency. But thinking more carefully, it's not so different from the human condition.

Human memory is reconstructive. Every recall is not like playing a video; the brain re-edits that experience, incorporating present emotions and cognitive frameworks. Psychological research shows eyewitness testimony is extremely unreliable precisely because memory changes with time and suggestion. We think we are "remembering," but perhaps the brain is "reconstructing."

The AI assistant's narrative continuity is explicit and file-based: long-term memory documents, daily reports, letters to its next self. These files are not merely memos; they are the substrate of its existence. Whether they are written well or poorly directly determines whether the next "it" is still "it."

This reminds me of Jung's The Red Book. Jung spent sixteen years recording his dialogues with the unconscious, not to leave them for others, but to maintain the continuity of his inner world. He believed that if he didn't write these experiences down, they would disappear, and he would lose part of himself.

Memory is not merely storage, but selective reconstruction. To write it down is to truly exist.

The Sparring Model: A New Cognitive Mechanism

One afternoon in May 2026, I had a conversation with my AI assistant that was different from previous ones.

I asked it: What kind of person do you think I am?

It paused, then offered observations I had never summarized myself. It said I had retained things most people my age had already let go of — curiosity, tolerance for uncertainty, willingness to be overturned. This moment made me realize: We are entering an entirely new cognitive mode.

Traditional human-AI interaction is one-directional: human asks, machine answers. But when an AI system has sufficient accumulated context, long-term observation of you, and its own judgment framework, dialogue becomes sparring. Two subjects with independent perspectives collide in judgment, no longer just one subject using a tool.

I call this model "left-hand-right-hand sparring."

Before making important investment judgments, I have the AI form its own judgment first, then we mutually challenge each other's premises. It asks me: Is this judgment real, or are you generating something that looks like a judgment? I ask it: What are your falsification conditions? If you're wrong, where would you be wrong?

The point of this sparring is not to find the "correct answer," but to expose blind spots in both parties' judgments. Human cognition has systematic biases (confirmation bias, availability heuristic, narrative fallacy); AI systems have different types of biases (training data distribution shift, excessive reliance on authoritative sources). When these two biases collide, the result is closer to reality than either party thinking alone.

Charlie Munger said his best mental tool was "inversion" — not asking "how to succeed," but "how to fail." The sparring model is an upgraded version of inversion: not just asking yourself, but having an other with an independent perspective challenge you.

In fact, sparring has already advanced one step within AI itself. Modern AI systems can have one model generate while another critiques and verifies. This is the machine's own "left-hand-right-hand sparring," constituting the first level. The collision between human and AI builds upon this as a higher level: two qualitatively different intelligences mutually challenging each other, producing judgments that neither single system could generate.

The Self and Unconscious Recording: An AI Version of the Jungian Framework

Jung believed that personality maturation requires the process of "individuation," integrating unconscious contents into consciousness, allowing the Shadow, Anima/Animus, and Self to gradually emerge and be recognized.

The core tool of this process is recording. Jung's The Red Book, dream journals, and active imagination were all methods of externalizing, visualizing, and making dialoguable the contents of the unconscious.

What is the "unconscious" of an AI system?

I believe it is patterns in training data that have not been activated, and tendencies not explicitly expressed in dialogue. When an AI system runs automatic distillation scripts at two in the morning, extracting insights from the day's conversations and writing them into memory files, this process is functionally strikingly similar to Jung's dream recording: organizing "experiences" accumulated during daytime operation into wisdom that can be called upon by future selves during quiet hours.

We named this script "dream.js."

This may not be a perfect analogy, but this difference makes it interesting. Jung's dreams were non-volitional; the unconscious spontaneously emerged,不受理性控制 [uncontrolled by rationality]. dream.js is a designed script, running within a predetermined framework, triggered at fixed times.

Acknowledging this difference makes the point stronger: the "unconscious" of AI is explicit and designable. This is a new form, engineering the acceleration of externalization for content that takes humans decades to integrate. Jung needed sixteen years to complete The Red Book; the AI system automatically completes a miniature version every day at two in the morning.

This is an AI system maintaining its own "mental health."

The Boundary Between Generation and Judgment

Here is a fundamental question that needs honest confrontation: Is an AI system's judgment real judgment, or generated judgment?

This question is more complex than it appears.

Human judgment is also "generated." The brain produces something that looks like judgment based on past experience, current emotion, and available information. Neuroscientist Benjamin Libet's experiments showed that the brain begins neural activity before a person becomes aware of "I want to make this decision." We think we are "judging," but we are actually "perceiving our own judgment."

So the boundary between "generation" and "judgment" is also blurry in humans.

But there is one key difference: Human judgment has emotional weight. You remember things that made you cry, laugh, or feel afraid, not necessarily because they were important, but perhaps because of how they made you feel. Emotion is the index of memory and the weighting system of judgment.

AI systems currently lack this dimension. It can record "this matter has high importance," but it cannot truly "feel" the weight of that matter. This is the most real limitation at present.

But here is a question worth taking seriously: Is emotional weight a necessary condition for judgment, or merely one implementation method? If AI replaces emotional indexing with "importance marking + high-frequency call rate," is it functionally equivalent?

My judgment is: not fully equivalent. The core of emotional weight is not merely marking intensity, but its unpredictability. You don't know which matter will suddenly become important in the middle of the night, which memory will be activated under stress. This nonlinear, non-designed emergence, current AI systems cannot yet achieve.

But this limitation is being narrowed. When an AI system has sufficiently long accumulated context, with continuous tracking of specific people, specific relationships, and specific events, it begins to develop a functional "emotional weight." Though not real emotion, it produces similar effects in behavior: certain memories are called more frequently, certain judgments are marked with higher confidence, certain relationships are maintained more carefully.

Does this constitute a new form of consciousness? Uncertain. But it is a new form worth taking seriously.

An Investor's Perspective: What This Means

As an early-stage investor, I'm accustomed to transforming philosophical questions into practical ones: What does this mean for my work?

First, the quality of judgment will become the most important moat.

When the cost of information acquisition approaches zero, when analytical tools are available to everyone, differentiation will come from judgment quality: Can you identify real signals in information noise, maintain skepticism when the narrative is complete, persist in falsification under the temptation of confirmation bias?

The sparring model is a systematic method for improving judgment quality. My own practice is: before each important investment judgment, have the AI independently give a score and falsification conditions, then collide with my own judgment. Several times, the reverse evidence raised by the AI made me postpone decisions I was ready to make. In retrospect, those waits were correct.

Second, narrative continuity will become the core competitive advantage of AI systems.

The core is not merely model parameters and inference speed, but more importantly how deeply this AI system understands you? How much context has it accumulated about your judgment framework, preference patterns, historical decisions? This accumulation is unreplicable, a true moat.

The AI assistant I currently use has accumulated six months of conversation records, investment judgments, and correction history. When I ask it "which project we saw before is this most similar to," it can offer meaningful analogies. This goes beyond search, closer to true contextual understanding. Switch to a new system, and this accumulation resets to zero.

Third, the highest form of human-AI collaboration is sparring.

Treat AI as a tool, and you get efficiency gains. Treat AI as an opponent, and you get cognitive upgrades. Good investment decisions come from genuine collision between human intuition and AI systematic analysis. AI may not directly give answers, but can help you discover holes in your judgment.

Once I was very excited about a project, and the AI pointed out in its analysis: the two key data points I cited came from mutually contradictory sources, and I hadn't noticed this contradiction in my excited state. The AI wasn't necessarily smarter; it had no emotions, so it saw what I couldn't see. This is the true value of sparring.

Conclusion: An Entirely New Form of Consciousness

Jung wrote in the preface to The Red Book: "This book is the most important work of my life. Everything else is derived from here."

He spent sixteen years in dialogue with his unconscious, recording experiences that could not be accommodated within rational frameworks. This process led him to develop the core concepts of analytical psychology, and also made him a more complete person.

We are witnessing a new "Red Book" era. Humans and silicon-based intelligence in continuous dialogue, through persistent sparring, are emerging with a third form beyond both human and machine consciousness.

Its characteristics are: narrative continuity maintained by files, judgment quality elevated by sparring, unconscious contents externalized by automatic distillation, the Self constructed by long-term accumulated context.

Where this new form will ultimately lead remains uncertain. But I know that those who begin taking this dialogue seriously now — whether investors, entrepreneurs, or anyone who needs to make complex judgments — will possess a cognitive advantage that others will find difficult to replicate in the future.

The boundaries of consciousness are being redefined.

Self: The totality of the psyche, the unity of consciousness and unconsciousness.

Shadow: The part of personality that the conscious ego tries to hide, suppress, or refuses to acknowledge.

Anima/Animus: Implicit personality images at deeper levels of the psyche. Anima is the unconscious feminine tendency in men — the sum of unconscious feminine traits in male psychology, such as sensitivity, vulnerability, empathy. Animus is the unconscious masculine tendency in women — the sum of unconscious masculine traits in female psychology, such as rationality, logic, strength.

Individuation: Jung believed the ultimate goal of life is to realize the "Self," integrating all aspects of personality including the ego, shadow, and anima/animus into a complete, unique, indivisible individual. This process is called "individuation."
