After Listening to This Episode, You'll Know How to Talk About AI | Summarizing Y Combinator's 260 AI Investments Over the Past Year

May 26, 2024

We believe the best way to understand an industry is to understand what the people in it are actually doing. So naturally, the best way to understand AI is to understand what the top founders in AI are working on.

In our previous crossover episode between "Crossroads" and "The Art of Slaying Dragons," we went through Y Combinator's roughly 260 AI investments from the past year one by one. The five-and-a-half-hour podcast had a completion rate of just 27%. To make this accessible to more people, we've recorded this condensed summary.

Y Combinator is the most formidable startup incubator in Silicon Valley, known as YC. Over the past year, YC has invested in more than 260 AI startups. They represent a microcosm of AI entrepreneurship trends in Silicon Valley and worldwide.

In the previous episode, Minghao and I visited each of these 260 YC-backed AI companies' products and websites, trying to understand them, learn from them, and thereby grasp what top AI founders are actually building. It was a podcast marathon, lasting five and a half hours.

This 50-minute episode is a distilled summary. Based on Minghao's presentation (full contents available in the shownotes), we conducted more macro-level statistical analysis of these 260 AI companies, synthesizing our respective observations and perspectives to better help ourselves — and all of you — understand the entrepreneurial trends in AI at this moment.

🚦 Subscribe to "Crossroads," where we track the industry transformations and new entrepreneurial opportunities brought by the new wave of AI technology. "Crossroads" was Steve Jobs' metaphor for Apple — standing at the intersection of technology and liberal arts, where great products are born. AI is transforming every industry. We seek out, interview, and bring together "active participants" of the AI era, exploring and embracing new changes and new possibilities alongside them.
