Samsung Unveils Smart Ring Galaxy Ring

At its Galaxy Unpacked 2024 global launch event, Samsung unveiled multiple new products including the Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Buds3, and Galaxy Buds3 Pro. The foldable devices — Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 — became the first models to support on-device generative AI powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen3 and Google Gemini. Beyond the foldables, Samsung Electronics also debuted another wearable: the Galaxy Ring.

Samsung's smart ring, the Galaxy Ring, opened for pre-orders on launch day and will officially release on July 24, priced at $399 in the United States and €449 in the European Union. Despite the early-access version costing 3,099 yuan, the China-exclusive launch edition on Samsung Electronics' official website has already sold out.

SoundHound AI Expands Across Europe

SoundHound AI, Inc[1], a global leader in artificial intelligence, announced that its SoundHound Chat AI voice assistant — integrated with ChatGPT technology — has successfully launched in 11 European markets and is now in production in vehicle models from Peugeot, Opel, and Vauxhall. These markets include Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The service is expected to expand to 17 markets and support 12 different languages by the end of July.

Following the announcement, SoundHound's stock surged over 22% on Wednesday, reaching its highest closing price since May 22. The news also lifted other AI-related stocks, including Baidu, C3.ai[2], Oracle, and Super Micro Computer, reflecting market optimism about AI technology applications in the automotive industry.

Microsoft, OpenAI Face Antitrust Scrutiny

Microsoft and Apple recently relinquished their observer seats on OpenAI's board, a move widely seen as an attempt to ease concerns from U.S. and UK antitrust regulators about potential monopolistic control over OpenAI.

Nevertheless, sources at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) indicated this change is unlikely to resolve government concerns, as the FTC continues its antitrust review of Microsoft and OpenAI's investment transactions. Microsoft's investment in OpenAI exceeds $10 billion, which has drawn scrutiny from EU, UK, and U.S. antitrust regulators over its influence on the AI company.

Shanghai Unveils Elderly Care Tech Innovation Plan

Shanghai's municipal government recently released the Shanghai Action Plan for Advancing Elderly Care Technology Innovation and Development (2024-2027), aiming to establish the city as a leading hub for elderly care technology innovation and industrial development by 2027. The plan emphasizes R&D in AI technologies, including speech, facial, emotional, and motion recognition, as well as environmental perception models and algorithms, with a focus on advancing embodied intelligence and generative AI to enhance the autonomy of elderly care products. "Robots" receive repeated mention in the key product development section, spanning categories including rehabilitation robots, exoskeleton robots, nursing robots, and companion robots.

Elderly care robots, as a tangible AI application, have garnered sustained attention. For example, Fudan University's "Guanghua No. 1" elderly care robot demonstrates strong performance in actions such as "assisting elderly individuals to stand," can read human expressions, and generate appropriate emotional responses. This robot is planned for testing in Sichuan, Henan, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, with small-scale industrial promotion expected by 2025. Meanwhile, Anhui Province's humanoid robotics industry innovation center recently received approval, stating it will build China's first humanoid robotics research base targeting needs in healthcare and elderly care.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Open-Sources 3D Medical Image Segmentation Model

A joint team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory released SAT[3] (Segment Anything in radiology scans, driven by Text prompts), a 3D medical image segmentation foundation model. SAT enables universal segmentation of 497 types of human organs and lesions in 3D medical images (such as CT, MR, and PET) through text prompts.

The research makes three main contributions: First, it pioneers injecting human anatomical knowledge into the text encoder for precise encoding of anatomical terminology. Second, it constructs a multimodal medical knowledge graph encompassing 6,000+ human anatomical concepts, alongside SAT-DS, the largest-scale 3D medical image segmentation dataset to date. Third, it trains two models of different sizes — SAT-Pro (447M parameters) and SAT-Nano (110M parameters) — and validates SAT's value from multiple perspectives.

Quark Upgrades AI "Super Search Box"

Quark[4] upgraded its "Super Search Box," aiming to provide comprehensive AI services that meet users' diverse needs in information retrieval, generation, and processing. Quark 7.0 centers on AI search, expanding its functional scenarios and service capabilities to cover users' entire workflow from information retrieval to generation and processing. Beyond search answers, content creation, and summarization, Quark integrates various content products and intelligent tools including cloud storage, scanning, document processing, CueMe, study assistant, and health assistant.

"A super search box that can answer, create, and summarize — this is Quark's new definition of AI search," said Wu Jia, president of Alibaba's Intelligent Information Business Group. "Advantages in large models, data, and scenarios are accelerating Quark's transformation of search products and creating greater user value. Having crossed the threshold of entirely new large-model application experiences, Quark has fully entered the AI era, and innovations in one-stop AI services will continue to emerge."

"Shanghai's Temasek": 89 Billion in a Single Day

Following the merger and restructuring of Shanghai State-owned Investment and Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Group, the combined entity's scale and investment capabilities have reached new heights, widely seen as building a "Shanghai version of Temasek."

After Beijing announced a new batch of industrial investment funds totaling 50 billion yuan, Shanghai made its move. Three industry-leading funds of funds with a combined scale of 89 billion yuan were recently established:

  • A 45 billion yuan integrated circuit fund, targeting chip design, manufacturing and packaging, equipment materials and components;
  • A 21.5 billion yuan biomedicine fund, targeting innovative drugs and high-end formulations, high-end medical devices, biotechnology, and high-end pharmaceutical equipment;
  • A 22.5 billion yuan artificial intelligence fund, targeting intelligent chips, intelligent software, autonomous driving, and intelligent robots — the largest AI fund of funds in Shanghai and nationwide.

The AI fund of funds currently has 11 intended contributing partners.

AMD Acquires Silo AI for $665 Million

Chip giant AMD announced it will acquire Finnish AI startup Silo AI for approximately $665 million in cash. Based in Helsinki, Finland, Silo AI specializes in end-to-end AI-driven solutions that help customers integrate the technology into their products and services. The startup maintains offices across Europe and North America, with clients including Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever.

The acquisition aims to strengthen AMD's AI chip capabilities to compete with industry leader NVIDIA. AMD stated that buying Silo AI will help improve the development and deployment of AMD-powered AI models, and assist potential customers in building complex AI models using AMD chips. Silo AI will also bolster AMD's software development capabilities.

New Benchmark for LLM Meta-Reasoning Arrives

MIT, in collaboration with Tsinghua University, the University of Cambridge, and other leading institutions, proposed Mr-Ben[5], a benchmark dataset evaluating large language models' ability to "grade" and critique reasoning processes for complex problems. Unlike previous datasets that relied on "answer matching" for evaluation, this dataset is meticulously constructed through high-quality human annotation based on GSM8K, MMLU, LogiQA, and MHPP, significantly increasing difficulty and discriminative power.

All data in this benchmark has been open-sourced, with one-click evaluation supported for all large model training enthusiasts.

I only hope and pray that my state of mind will not grow coarser and more barren — that is my greatest wish.
