Volkswagen Group is one of the world's largest automotive multinationals, described in elsewhere's corpus as "世界汽车行业中最具实力的跨国公司之一" . Its China strategy has centered on deepening partnerships with local technology leaders rather than going it alone.

The group's most prominent collaboration is with Xpeng Motors, which began with a strategic framework agreement in July 2023 and a roughly $700 million investment for a 4.99% stake at $15 per ADS . This evolved through multiple phases: platform and software joint development by March 2024 , electronic and electrical architecture agreements in April and July 2024 , and an expanded architecture deal announced in August 2025 . The partnership's stated aim is to accelerate development at "中国速度" .

Separately, Volkswagen has pursued autonomous driving through its software unit CARIAD. In October 2022 it announced a joint venture with Horizon Robotics, which it would control, to develop ADAS and autonomous systems for China . By April 2025, this deepened into cooperation on Horizon's full-scenario intelligent driving solution HSD, with the joint venture CARIZON tasked with designing system-level computing solutions in China .
