Volkswagen Group is one of the world's largest automotive conglomerates, described in elsewhere's corpus as "world汽车行业中最具实力的跨国公司之一" (one of the most powerful multinational corporations in the global automotive industry) . Its strategic focus in China has increasingly centered on technology partnerships with domestic EV and intelligent driving players, most notably through a multi-layered collaboration with Xpeng Motors initiated in July 2023 .

The group invested approximately $700 million for a 4.99% stake in Xpeng at $15 per ADS, securing a board observer seat . The partnership quickly expanded beyond capital into joint development: first for two mid-size Volkswagen-brand EV models targeted at the Chinese market, slated for 2026 launch ; then into deeper electronic and electrical architecture cooperation, with a joint development agreement signed in July 2024 and project teams established in Guangzhou and Hefei . By 2025, the two parties had signed an expanded protocol to broaden this architecture across Volkswagen's platforms and powertrain types .

Separately, Volkswagen Group has deepened its collaboration with Horizon Robotics, with their joint venture CARIZON (酷睿程) — formed with Volkswagen's software unit CARIAD — designing system-level computing solutions to support the group's advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving systems in China .
