"An open platform full of imagination."

"What does building a QQ Mini Program mean? First, access to a highly valuable young user market. Second, greater openness in platform capabilities." Xia Ziran, head of the QQ Mini Program industry ecosystem, shared the strategic value of QQ Mini Programs for developers at the "Ronghui · Inside QQ Mini Programs" event.

On May 31 this year, QQ Mini Programs fully launched; by July, the platform officially opened self-service access to enterprises, individual developers, and third-party developers. Built on QQ — China's largest social platform for young people — the launch of QQ Mini Programs created a new ecosystem covering 800 million active Gen Z internet users and offering fresh ways to connect with young audiences.

On September 26, Gaorong Ventures' "Ronghui" and QQ Mini Programs' "Mini Talk" co-hosted a salon. A total of 45 members from Gaorong Ventures' portfolio companies were invited to Tencent for in-depth conversations with the QQ Mini Programs team, exploring platform strategy across product, operations, and commercialization dimensions, and jointly investigating innovative development models and monetization opportunities.

What does building a QQ Mini Program mean? Young + Open

"Maybe you're no longer the carefree youth you once were, but QQ remains as vibrant as ever." Xia Ziran noted that looking back at nearly two decades of Chinese internet history, if there's one product that keeps growing up without ever growing old, it's QQ. Today, QQ's user base has reached 807.9 million monthly active users. Smart terminal monthly active users hit 707 million, and the proportion of young users continues to climb steadily.

For developers, then, QQ Mini Programs represent a "new frontier" for reaching young users. In the three months since launch, the platform has already seen a wave of popular "Q-flavored mini programs" that capture young people's entertainment and social needs, spanning categories like pan-entertainment, personalized utilities, social features, creative design, and campus life.

Beyond that, openness is a major advantage of the QQ Mini Program platform. QQ Mini Programs offer developers fast onboarding support, rich special capabilities, and multi-scenario exposure. This includes bridging instant messaging (QQ) and asynchronous social networking (Qzone), amplifying social traffic distribution.

Michael Mao, founding partner of Gaorong Ventures, also pointed out that QQ Mini Programs, as a new platform for connecting with and serving young users, is worth investing in for startup companies.

Product, Operations, and Commercialization: Three Dimensions to Understanding QQ Mini Programs

During the sharing session, leaders from QQ Mini Programs' product, operations, and commercialization teams explained the platform's open capabilities and empowerment strategies from their respective angles.

Wei Xiaoyuan, product lead for QQ Mini Programs, noted that as a national-level application, QQ can work alongside WeChat to build out Tencent's open ecosystem across different tracks, serving diverse user needs. Based on QQ's product characteristics and user profile, QQ Mini Programs will focus more heavily on social features, personalization, and online-offline integration. On the product development side, the platform offers developers rich specialized capabilities, including one-click Qzone posting, real-time voice chat, open data domains, and launching third-party apps — with payment, livestreaming, and other features to be continuously improved.

Huang Qian, industry operations lead for QQ Mini Programs, shared the official operations playbook with attending companies, covering entry point distribution, cold-start support, and platform operation strategies.

Gu Peiying, commercialization lead for QQ Mini Programs, approached from a monetization angle, explaining how QQ Mini Programs provides solutions around advertising, payments, and other commercial models. For traffic monetization, for example, QQ Mini Programs offers diverse ad format options, differentiated product capability support, and streamlined publisher access.

Gaorong Portfolio Companies in Dialogue with QQ Mini Programs: Co-Creation for the Future

During the event, 45 members from the Gaorong family also shared their own explorations and positioning in the mini program ecosystem, along with their visions for developing on QQ Mini Programs. Danke Apartment, for instance, has already joined the QQ Mini Program platform. Hou Yifan, chief growth officer at Danke, noted that since Danke is committed to creating quality rental apartments for young people, its target user base aligns well with QQ's demographics, and the company will explore richer connection formats for young users on QQ Mini Programs going forward.

Developers also engaged in dialogue with the QQ Mini Programs team on topics like e-commerce mini program opportunities and QQ Mini Programs' social distribution integration, jointly exploring possibilities for future product development.

As the QQ Mini Programs slogan puts it, this is "an open platform full of imagination." We look forward to Gaorong portfolio companies joining hands with the QQ platform to explore open collaboration and co-create "Q-flavored mini programs" that young people love.

Gaorong Ventures' "Ronghui" is dedicated to building an ecosystem network, sharing knowledge and insights with outstanding entrepreneurs, and enabling resource connections. Going forward, it will continue partnering with ecosystem platforms to better support founders.
