MemVerge Secures $19 Million Strategic Investment to Accelerate the "Big Memory Computing" Era
Intel, Cisco, NetApp, and SK hynix — industry leaders — have joined forces to invest, spearheading the big memory revolution.

On May 12, MemVerge, inventor of the Big Memory software Memory Machine™, announced it had raised $19 million in funding from strategic investors including Intel, Cisco, NetApp, and SK hynix. Gaorong Ventures led the company's previous round. Existing investors Gaorong Ventures, Glory Ventures, Jerusalem Venture Partners, LDV, Lightspeed China Partners, and Northern Light Venture Capital also participated in this round. Charles Fan, MemVerge co-founder and CEO, said the new funding will be used to continue R&D for Big Memory software Memory Machine™, while the company will build out its marketing organization to accelerate the arrival of the Big Memory computing era. Big Memory software Memory Machine™ is expected to officially launch in Q2 2020.

Big Memory Computing: A Revolutionary, Era-Defining Innovation
The joint strategic investment from global data center industry leaders signals that MemVerge is pioneering a new trend in memory computing — Big Memory Computing. This innovative technology will bring a revolution to data center infrastructure, enabling all applications to run in memory. Big Memory Computing combines persistent memory hardware with in-memory computing software, characterized by making memory capacity more abundant, persistent, and highly available.

Massive amounts of enterprise data are being generated at extreme speed, driven by artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, and high-performance computing applications. This poses enormous challenges for data science teams at internet giants and large enterprises. As data-centric workloads continue to grow, demand for in-memory computing keeps increasing. Yet due to the high cost, small capacity, and data volatility of current memory (DRAM), in-memory computing has been limited to only the most performance-critical workloads.
The emergence of persistent memory technology will completely change this situation. "This is a very distinctive medium. For the first time, it merges memory and storage — two different concepts — into a single physical medium. This is a very revolutionary, era-defining technology," said Fan.

Big Memory Software + Persistent Memory Technology: Helping Enterprises Process Massive In-Memory Data with Clear Application Scenarios
MemVerge was co-founded by Dr. Charles Fan, former SVP at VMware and SVP at EMC; Shuki Bruck, co-founder of XtremIO and Rainfinity and Gordon Moore Professor at Caltech; and Dr. Yue Li, postdoctoral scholar at Caltech.

MemVerge co-founder team
MemVerge is building Big Memory software Memory Machine™, which integrates Intel® Optane™ persistent memory technology to enable enterprises to process the surge of massive data in memory. The company has established a product roadmap to process petabyte-scale data volumes at nanosecond speeds. Notably, Memory Machine™ is compatible with current and future applications, providing memory-designed data services for Intel® Xeon® scalable platforms, such as ZeroIO™ memory snapshot and low-latency memory replication, to meet application demands for data persistence while reducing reliance on traditional storage media. The powerful combination of persistent memory and MemVerge Memory Machine™ software creates a new Big Memory resource pool, enabling memory-centric computing. MemVerge technology will transform data center architecture and make data-centric workloads easier to develop and deploy.
Global data center leaders including Intel, Cisco, NetApp, and SK hynix all share MemVerge's vision that as a new persistent, abundantly capacious Big Memory layer emerges, future data center workloads will become more memory-intensive. With appropriate software support like MemVerge Memory Machine™, Big Memory Computing will transform data center architecture and how applications are developed and deployed going forward. These data center leaders are investing in this vision.
"We are honored to work with industry leaders who share our vision to bring Big Memory resource pool solutions to enterprises through our Big Memory software," said Fan. "We founded MemVerge with the belief that every application should run in memory. As the first practitioner developing next-generation software for the Big Memory revolution, our goal is to provide enterprises with a more effective method for running data-intensive applications."

Fan noted that MemVerge's Big Memory software already has clear application scenarios in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and financial market data analytics. Enterprises can use Memory Machine™ to train and infer with AI and ML models faster, work with larger datasets in memory, complete more queries in less time, and replicate memory reliably across servers.

Industry Data Leaders' Joint Investment, Leading the Big Memory Revolution
Alper Ilkbahar, Vice President and General Manager of Memory and Storage Products at Intel's Data Platforms Group, said, "We are honored to lead the Big Memory revolution alongside MemVerge, an Intel® Optane™ persistent memory ecosystem partner. The MemVerge team and its innovative Memory Machine™ software stand at the forefront of the industry's shift toward Big Memory Computing. The combination of MemVerge Memory Machine™ software and Intel® Optane™ persistent memory enables more applications to run in memory."
"We are pleased to see the progress MemVerge has made in creating Big Memory software, this revolutionary software that can help enterprises address the challenge of machine-generated massive data," said Mark Rostick, Vice President and Senior Managing Director of Intel Capital. "With MemVerge Memory Machine™ software and Intel® Optane™ persistent memory, enterprises can gain insights from near-real-time massive data more efficiently and quickly."
"At NetApp, we are committed to helping customers leverage data to enhance business potential," said Brad Anderson, Executive Vice President at NetApp. "MemVerge's software fuses persistent memory, hyperconverged infrastructure, container orchestration, and all key components to support data-intensive applications such as AI, ML, and intelligent analytics. Our investment in MemVerge expresses our alignment with the future of storage technology development."
