Shuimu BioSciences has built Asia's first commercial protein structure analysis platform centered on 300kV top-tier cryo-EM, dedicated to using breakthrough technology to dramatically accelerate drug discovery and improve the druggability of difficult targets.

Shuimu Biosciences Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Shuimu Biosciences") recently announced the completion of a tens-of-millions-of-RMB angel round, jointly invested by Gaorong Ventures, Puhua Capital, and Mint Ventures. The proceeds will be primarily used to build and optimize its technology platforms and strengthen its talent pipeline.

Founded in late 2017 and headquartered in Beijing, Shuimu Biosciences is dedicated to dramatically accelerating drug discovery and unlocking previously intractable targets through breakthrough technologies.

Since its inception, Shuimu Biosciences has built Asia's first commercial protein structure determination platform centered on a 300kV top-tier cryo-electron microscope (cryo-EM). Leveraging Tsinghua University and its self-developed revolutionary structural analysis methodologies, along with structure-based and computational drug discovery technologies, the company has constructed a world-class next-generation drug discovery platform. It provides comprehensive technical services to global pharmaceutical R&D companies and institutions, including novel target validation, compound library screening, hit identification, and therapeutic antibody development.

Shuimu Biosciences' novel drug discovery technologies effectively address the limitations of traditional pharmaceutical R&D: unknown target structures, high randomness, lengthy development cycles, and prohibitive costs. The company has elevated structure-based drug design (SBDD) to a new level.

Professor Hongwei Wang, co-founder and chair of Shuimu Biosciences' Scientific Advisory Board, and dean of Tsinghua University's School of Life Sciences, stated: "After years of development, cryo-EM has become one of the most powerful structural biology methods. It holds unique advantages in resolving near-native-state, high-resolution structures of biologically significant membrane proteins and macromolecular complexes, opening entirely new possibilities for structure-based drug discovery."

Guo Chunlong, co-founder and CEO of Shuimu Biosciences, said: "Throughout humanity's long history of battling disease, we've largely been groping in the dark. The advancement of structural biology has brought a turning point — especially recent breakthroughs in cryo-EM, which finally give us the opportunity to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular and atomic scale. This enables targeted drug development, transforming a millennia-old black-box problem into a white-box one. Cryo-EM is further digitizing drug discovery, dramatically improving R&D efficiency and making previously undruggable targets druggable."

A project lead at Gaorong Ventures commented: "Driven by national policies, technological innovation, and other factors, China's healthcare industry has undergone a pronounced shift from imitation to innovation. Innovation stems from fundamental research, and China is at the global forefront in structural biology, particularly cryo-EM-based structural analysis. Shuimu Biosciences is a platform company that translates this research advantage into commercial applications — on one hand providing protein structure determination services to clients, and on the other hand advancing structure-based drug discovery services. With its Tsinghua University research background, Shuimu Biosciences enjoys unique advantages in this field and tremendous growth potential."

Shuimu Biosciences' management and technical team members primarily come from top domestic research institutions including Tsinghua University and the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing. Professor Hongwei Wang, co-founder and chair of the Scientific Advisory Board, is dean, professor, and doctoral advisor at Tsinghua University's School of Life Sciences, a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award, and the Xplorer Prize. He has been engaged in cryo-EM research for many years, focusing primarily on methodology development.

Shuimu Biosciences also brings together numerous experts in protein crystallography, computational chemistry, immunology, medicinal chemistry, and other drug discovery-related fields.
