Umabio announced today that it has raised tens of millions of RMB in an angel round led by Linear Capital, with participation from Suzhou High-Tech Sci-Tech Angel Fund.

Founded in 2016 in Shanghai's Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Umabio focuses on the R&D and commercialization of gene editing and exosome core technologies. It is a leading enterprise in the exosome field, a cooperating unit of Shanghai Organ Repair Engineering Technology Research Center, and has won multiple awards in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. The company holds multiple invention patents and over 30 software copyrights.

Centered on exosome development, the company has solved technical challenges in exosome purification, drug encapsulation, and labeling. It has independently developed exosome-anchored protein expression technology to advance exosome drug carriers, and has established a product line with both research-grade and industrialization capabilities — making it one of China's first biotech companies to achieve successful exosome commercialization.

The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to three scientists for their discoveries of the machinery regulating vesicle (including exosomes) trafficking, a major transport system in cells. Since then, exosome-related research has grown exponentially.

Exosomes are membrane-bound vesicles with a diameter of approximately 30–150 nm, secreted by living cells. They are found in nearly all tissues, intercellular spaces, and bodily fluids — including blood, saliva, urine, and breast milk. They carry proteins, miRNAs, lncRNAs, circRNAs, mRNAs, and their degradation fragments involved in intracellular signal transduction, playing important roles in regulating cellular activities. Exosomes show promise as early diagnostic biomarkers for various diseases and as drug delivery vehicles of multiple types.

Umabio is among the earliest Chinese companies specializing in exosome research, services, and related reagent development. The company's founder and CEO, Bo Gao, holds a PhD in neurobiology from Fudan University, an MS in virology from Wuhan University, and a BS in bioengineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University. He has participated in the management and product development of multiple biotechnology projects, as well as over 10 national, provincial, and municipal research projects. He holds 17 authorized invention patents and has published 13 SCI papers.
