Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission issued a notice on establishing the 2025 Guangdong Provincial Engineering Research Centers. The announcement revealed that MaHui member Sunwoda Electronic Co.,Ltd. Power Technology will lead the establishment of the "Aircraft Power Battery Guangdong Provincial Engineering Research Center." The center will target the cutting-edge field of aircraft power batteries, focusing on R&D of high-safety, high-specific-energy solid-state aircraft power batteries, aiming to break through critical technical bottlenecks and provide core power support for Guangdong's ambition to build a world-class low-altitude manufacturing hub and cultivate new quality productive forces.

Targeting the Blue Ocean of Low-Altitude Economy Setting Clear Technical Objectives

As the low-altitude economy has been incorporated into development plans across multiple regions and designated as a strategic emerging industry, electric aircraft — key enablers of urban air mobility and green logistics — depend heavily on breakthroughs in power battery technology. Compared to automotive power batteries, aircraft power batteries face nearly stringent demands for energy density, power output, temperature adaptability, and safety.

To this end, the newly established engineering research center has set clear technical goals: developing solid-state cells with energy density ≥450Wh/kg and cycle life exceeding 500 cycles, as well as high-safety solid-state battery systems with energy density ≥300Wh/kg and continuous discharge power density ≥1000W/kg, ultimately achieving reliable installation and application on electric aircraft. These metrics directly address the core pain points of current electric aircraft in range and performance.

According to industry forecasts, China's low-altitude economy market size is expected to exceed one trillion yuan by 2026.
