Spring 2014. Source Code Capital was founded in Beijing.
"Source code" is a term from computer science. It typically refers to the code underlying a product — the very foundation of what makes a product possible.
"Source" also carries the aspiration of tracing back to first principles, of focusing on essence. And "code" follows from principles, patterns, algorithms, and change. Yi Cao, the founder of Source Code Capital, was precisely the archetypal "Tsinghua tech guy" — a computer science major who, in his student days, lost himself in the joy of building products through code. After becoming an entrepreneur, he hoped to realize lasting, real value through technological innovation from multiple angles.
By 2023, Source Code Capital had entered its ninth year. The firm manages approximately RMB 35 billion across RMB and USD funds. Its entrusted capital comes primarily from national guidance funds, local sci-tech innovation funds, financial institutions, marketized fund-of-funds, industrial investors, globally renowned sovereign wealth funds, university endowments, charitable foundations, and pension funds. Source Code has also built an institutionalized team of over 150 investment and professional staff, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It has invested in more than 300 startups — including Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI, 2015.HK), ByteDance, Meituan (3690.HK), and KE Holdings (NYSE: BEKE) — spanning seed, early, and growth stages, across industries including industrial digitization, smart manufacturing, consumer technology, life sciences, green development, and global expansion.
