PAM2L Biotechnologies Closes Series A Funding Round, Backed by Multiple Fortune 500 Corporate Investors | Yunqi Capital
AI-Native R&D Closed Loop

At this stage in synthetic biology, the real test is whether new molecules can actually get registered, mass-produced, and make it into finished products. Yunqi Capital portfolio company PAM2L Biotechnologies, founded by Dr. Chao Zhong of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has built a DBAP closed-loop system integrating molecular design, biosynthesis, application development, and product commercialization. Its two molecular pipelines — recombinant mussel adhesive protein and Colamin — have already advanced into industrialization for beauty, healthcare, nutrition, and other sectors.
Recently, PAM2L announced the completion of over RMB 200 million in Series A financing. The A round was led by the Walgreens Boots Alliance Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Fund and L'Oréal's BOLD fund, with the A+ round led by Guangxin Fund. In this edition of "Yunqi Partners," we share the latest on PAM2L.
Synergizing with Strategic Capital
From Beauty to Medicine
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Chao Zhong of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, PAM2L is an innovative biomaterials company driven by synthetic biology and artificial intelligence.
Centering on the full journey from R&D to industrialization for novel biomaterials, the company has established a DBAP closed-loop system spanning "Design-Biosynthesis-Application-Product," alongside a comprehensive AI platform for biomaterials R&D. It has already laid out products and novel molecules including recombinant mussel adhesive protein and Colamin, continuously pushing forward their application development and industrialization in beauty, healthcare, nutrition, and other fields.
This round attracted strategic capital from Fortune Global 500 companies including L'Oréal, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group, and Guangxin Group. The A round was led by the Walgreens Boots Alliance Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Fund (a joint venture between Walgreens Boots Alliance and Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Group) and L'Oréal's BOLD fund, with participation from GRC, Cornerstone Capital, Xingbo Shenghui, and Junke Danmu. The A+ round was led by Guangxin Fund. The investor roster spans beauty, healthcare, international retail, biomanufacturing, and specialized investment institutions.
Proceeds will primarily fund upgrades to the AI biomaterials R&D platform, novel biomaterials development, scaled production, product development, and market expansion. The addition of diversified strategic investors will also help the company deepen collaboration with upstream and downstream partners across the value chain, driving innovative materials from R&D validation toward industrial application while continuously expanding domestic and international markets.
AI-Native R&D Closed Loop
From Molecule to Product
While established molecules tend to focus on process optimization, capacity expansion, and cost control, new molecules must typically pass through function discovery, application validation, and product adaptation before reaching industrialization. With this in mind, PAM2L connects R&D, application, and product requirements, building a data flywheel through continuous validation and feedback. It leverages multi-round iterative AI to drive coordinated iteration across molecular design, biomanufacturing, and product development, gradually refining a R&D and translation system oriented toward novel biomaterials.
Building on this foundation, and combining globally leading methodologies, experimental data, and industrial experience, PAM2L will further upgrade its AI-Native Biomaterials R&D Platform. By integrating AI-driven virtual laboratories with highly automated intelligent physical labs, the platform will achieve closed-loop, end-to-end candidate molecule design, screening, and functional research — boosting R&D efficiency and further supporting continuous iteration from early-stage research through application development.
PAM2L founder Dr. Chao Zhong said:
"The name 'PAM2L' carries our aspirations for the company: technology rooted and growing solid as a cypress, while the applications of our materials extend boundlessly. For novel biomaterials, producing a molecule is only the starting point. What matters more is continuously understanding its structure, function, and application value — ultimately solving real product and industry problems.
We aim to deepen our research on new molecules, solidify our technological foundation, and tighten the connection between R&D and industrial needs. The value of biomanufacturing lies not only in optimizing production methods for existing materials, but also in opening new technical pathways for developing new materials and functions.
Going forward, PAM2L will continue advancing the integration of AI and synthetic biology, carrying out sustained R&D around novel biomaterials, and working with industry partners to drive research outcomes toward scaled application and broader global markets."
