The Age of VUCA: How to Capture the Next Wave of Growth in Industrial Robots
June 30, 2023
What is the VUCA era?
VUCA stands for four states: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. First coined in 1991, the concept has recently re-entered the spotlight. Compared to the currently hot topic of "large models + robotics," Zhang Zhaohui, CEO of Youibot, argues that "the uncertainty coming from demand-side and supply chain aspects of the robotics industry may be a more pressing issue worth discussing and addressing within the sector."
Zhang Zhaohui earned his PhD in robotics from Xi'an Jiaotong University. In 2019, he attended ZhenFund's Founder's Brew startup camp, where he stood out for his sharp entrepreneurial instincts and technical expertise. ZhenFund subsequently led Youibot's Pre-A round in 2020 and participated in follow-on rounds.
When the economic environment shifted in 2020, Youibot rapidly pivoted its business, nimbly targeting strategic strongholds such as semiconductors and inspection, building competitive moats and quickly becoming the market leader in these segments. In 2021, Zhang continued leading his team to expand into new application scenarios, including lithium battery and new energy, driving new business growth and making Youibot the fastest-growing company in the industry. Notably, the mobile robots featured in The Wandering Earth II were drawn from Youibot's actual product lineup.
In this episode, he discusses how robotics companies navigate a high-risk industry environment, which technologies have brought breakthroughs and opportunities to robotics R&D, how robotics companies find their footing in a highly competitive landscape, how to improve production efficiency, and the differences between domestic and international robotics industry development.
