Ahead of the Olympics, a Conversation with UZIS Founder on China's Sports Consumer Market
July 25, 2024
UZIS spokesperson Zhang Ning is gunning for the Paris Olympics! Back in 2018, when Zhang Ning was still competing on the reality show Dunk of China, UZIS spotted him and signed him as a brand ambassador. Looking back on that decision, UZIS founder Sen Wang felt that "his pure love for basketball and competitive drive aligned perfectly with our brand spirit."
UZIS was founded in 2017, a new consumer brand that grew out of an old factory building in Changsha. It entered the next-generation basketball market starting with basketball socks. In less than five years, through precise insight into basketball consumers and distinctive product design, UZIS filled the gap in China's basketball sock segment and became the clear NO.1 in the category. Unlike the traditional brand playbook of "one category + broad audience," UZIS chose to expand its product range after establishing itself in basketball socks, continuing to focus its energy on the basketball community it knew best — exploring a new brand approach of "meeting all the needs of basketball players." As Sen Wang put it, the goal is to become "the next-generation basketball sports brand."
ZhenFund first connected with UZIS in 2021. In this episode, we invited Sen Wang, founder and CEO of UZIS, to talk with us about the story behind UZIS's founding, and his deep thinking on building a basketball brand across product, marketing, and organization. You'll hear about Sen Wang's entrepreneurial journey — including the story of how he decided to drop out of school after driving across the U.S. — and how UZIS grew step by step from a startup into the leading brand in the basketball sock segment. Subscribe and tune in~
