R&D Progress

01/ Zai Lab Announces Zocilurtatug Pelitecan (Zoci) Receives EMA Orphan Drug Designation

Qiming Venture Partners portfolio company Zai Lab (NASDAQ: ZLAB, 09688.HK) announced that the European Medicines Agency has granted orphan drug designation to zocilurtatug pelitecan (zoci, formerly ZL-1310), a potentially first-in-class antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) targeting Delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), for the treatment of pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma.

The designation is based on a positive opinion from the EMA's Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP). The committee recognized the severity of neuroendocrine carcinoma and the urgent need for new treatment options. Small cell lung cancer is the most common pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma, with approximately 2.5 million new lung cancer cases diagnosed globally each year, of which small cell lung cancer accounts for about 15% (an estimated 375,000 annual new cases) — one of the most rapidly progressing and lethal solid tumors. In granting the designation, COMP noted that preliminary clinical data in relapsed or refractory extensive-stage small cell lung cancer patients suggest zoci may demonstrate superior efficacy compared to existing approved therapies, including durable responses, which the committee deemed clinically relevant.

Pushi Lihua Secures Position in Tuberculosis Diagnostic Procurement Channel with World's Only NPOC Solution

Qiming Venture Partners portfolio company Pushi Lihua recently received its first definitive signal of entry into The Global Fund system, with initial purchase orders exceeding $13 million secured. Behind these 13-country projects lies a $50 million commitment from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to The Global Fund — the foundation's first investment in tuberculosis diagnostics, specifically earmarked to accelerate the introduction and scale-up of the entirely new NPOC solution. As the currently sole provider in this category, Pushi Lihua secured initial confirmed purchase orders exceeding $13 million.

Pushi Lihua entered The Global Fund's Early Adopter Initiative, a mechanism that allows innovative technologies to complete real-world validation, policy groundwork, and supply chain testing before large-scale procurement. The program covers 13 countries, led by The Global Fund with support from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and frontline implementation by the Aurum Institute.

Notably, the introduction in these countries departs from the typical small-scale pilots common for new technologies. Previously, new diagnostic technologies usually started with 5 to 10 sites per country; this time, countries are deploying directly at 40, 100, or even 200 sites based on their circumstances. This "scale from day one" posture itself represents a direct signal of procurement system demand intensity for this solution.

The 13 countries are Bangladesh, Benin, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zambia. By entering through this early window, Pushi Lihua gains first-mover position in the procurement system and the opportunity to help define standards, pricing, and processes before they become fixed.

Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals' Bofanglutide Ib/IIa Phase Glycemic Control Clinical Results Published Again in Cell Reports Medicine

Qiming Venture Partners portfolio company Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals (603087.SH) announced that its self-developed Class 1 new drug — Bofanglutide (GZR18) injection — following international recognition for its Ib/IIa phase weight reduction study, saw its Ib/IIa phase glycemic control clinical results in Chinese type 2 diabetes patients published on June 19 in the internationally authoritative journal Cell Reports Medicine. The journal's latest impact factor is 14.0, ranking in Q1 of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Medical Sciences category. The study results demonstrate that Bofanglutide injection can significantly reduce blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients, improve multiple cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, with overall good safety and tolerability.

In April this year, Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals' insulin aspart and insulin lispro raw materials passed GMP certification by Brazil's Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA). This means the company's insulin glargine, insulin lispro, and insulin aspart products have achieved dual compliance certification for both raw materials and formulations in Brazil, with manufacturing quality systems fully meeting local pharmaceutical regulatory standards — laying a solid foundation for the company's own insulin brands to formally enter the Brazilian market and deepen its presence in the Latin American pharmaceutical market.
