The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences is China's earliest research institution dedicated to large-scale compressed air energy storage technology . Since 2004, its researchers have originated advanced compressed air energy storage principles and built the world's first 1.5MW, 10MW, and 100MW demonstration systems, with performance metrics exceeding international peers . The institute holds over 300 authorized patents (including 20 international patents) and has published more than 400 papers, ranking first globally in patent count, SCI papers, and citations for compressed air energy storage . In May 2022, it jointly developed with China Energy Storage (Zhongchu Guoneng) the only compressed air project selected for the National Energy Administration's "First Set of Major Technical Equipment" list . Its technology has been commercialized through spin-off company China Energy Storage, which completed a Pre-A+ round in 2022 and a Series A round exceeding RMB 1 billion in 2023 .
