Kimi is the AI assistant product of Moonshot AI, a Chinese foundation-model company founded by Yang Zhilin. It debuted in October 2023 with a then-novel 200,000-character lossless context window and grew to roughly 40 million monthly active users by end of 2024, per ZhenFund's Yusen Dai . The product line has since expanded into a family of models: the trillion-parameter MoE base model K2 (July 2025), its reasoning variant K2 Thinking (November 2025), and the agentic K2.6 and K3 models that followed . K2 Thinking was open-sourced and, in Monolith's reading, narrowed the gap with closed frontier systems on complex reasoning and engineering benchmarks .

Moonshot AI closed a $500 million Series C in late December 2025, led by IDG with Alibaba, Tencent, and existing backers such as 5Y Capital, Gaorong Ventures, and BlueRun Ventures all oversubscribing; the capital is earmarked for GPU expansion and K3 training .
