Tencent Investment

Tencent Investment (腾讯投资) is Tencent's corporate investment arm — the vehicle through which the company takes equity stakes across gaming, AI, and other sectors rather than operating as an independent VC fund. Its playbook, as described by investor Mitch Lasky in a ZhenFund piece, is to take minority positions early in companies that could later become strategic: it bought into Riot Games before the full acquisition, built a stake in Discord from a small debt-for-equity conversion into a major shareholding, and joined Lasky's Series B in Snapchat — never insisting on owning the whole company, but positioning itself so that "if there's a chance to acquire the whole company later, they're first in line." The same piece notes Tencent invested early in Riot, Supercell, and Epic before any of them were crowned giants. Recent activity in elsewhere's corpus shows it staying active as a follow-on investor: it joined the Tencent Investment 跟投 in Zenitar's nearly 600 million yuan Series C (per Qiming Venture Partners, January 2026) and, alongside Qiming and 5Y Capital, topped up its position in StepFun's 5 billion yuan-plus B+ round (per 5Y Capital, February 2026).
