Yang You is the founder and chairman of Luchen Tech (潞晨科技), a company he started alone in July 2021 to build a distributed AI development and deployment platform aimed at lowering the cost of putting large models into production . A UC Berkeley PhD and NUS President's Young Professor, he previously set world records for ImageNet and BERT training speed — in 2018 he cut BERT training from three days to 76 minutes . Per BlueRun Ventures' coverage, around 2021 he became convinced of the foundation-model trend, which drove the founding; he has also publicly argued that AI foundation models "have no intellectual property — only open source can go the distance," while warning that model-parameter growth was far outpacing hardware . Luchen Tech has since raised multiple hundreds-of-millions-RMB rounds and expanded into video-generation models .
