Recently, Xingchen Zhang, Managing Director at Source Code Capital, emphasized the importance of technology-driven innovation at the Tech Youth Global Entrepreneurship Roundtable.
From 0 to 1 Requires Sharp Ideas, Solutions, and Execution
When it comes to bringing tech products from 0 to 1, three core elements matter most at the execution level:
- First, you need "sharp" independent thinking — the ability to identify a real market need.
- Second, you need to propose a "sharp" solution. Most ordinary approaches have likely been tried already; founders must offer differentiated solutions to gain an edge.
- Finally, you need to execute and build the product around the identified need, with the ability to continuously adapt and iterate as circumstances change.
At the product commercialization level, founders need foresight about the industry: when defining the first-generation product, you must not only nail the functionality but also consider supply chain maturity and whether costs are low enough. This ensures sufficient gross margin to cover ongoing R&D costs and upstream supply chain expenses, forming a more sustainable competitive advantage.
Finding Technology That Goes From 0 to 1
Every generation of young people entering society feels that "the good times are over." Adjust your mindset — the present is the best era. There are no longer low-hanging fruits; young people need to be willing to tackle the "hard fruits." China's economic development has reached a stage where there is no path laid by predecessors to guide us, and it is no longer an era of chasing trends or betting on sectors. It is an era where we must create new technology products and new trends ourselves. In frontier technology sectors such as quantum computing, commercial aerospace, new materials, and biomedicine, we must forge our own path of original technology.
Finding Partners on the Entrepreneurial Journey
How do founders find people, money, and direction? What fits you best. On direction: observe real needs at every level — country, society, enterprise, and individual — while also combining your technical background and team resources to find the intersection from both internal and external perspectives. Direction also determines the difficulty of finding people and funding later. On funding: founders should maximize their fundraising options, whether venture capital, strategic corporate investment, or upstream and downstream partners — exhaust every possible resource. On people: the best isn't necessarily the most outstanding. The more outstanding the founder, the more aware they are of their own shortcomings. Finding core talent that complements you and fits well is key.
