Traditional Customs

Eating mooncakes is the main custom of the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to existing records, this tradition dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Xizong tasted mooncakes during the festival and found them so exquisite that he ordered the imperial kitchen to wrap them in red silk as gifts for the newly minted jinshi scholars. By the Song Dynasty, mooncakes had acquired elegant names like "lotus leaf," "golden flower," and "hibiscus," and their preparation had grown more refined. The poet Su Shi once praised them in verse: "Small cakes like chewing on the moon, with crispness and sweetness within." One can imagine how delicious they must have been.

In ancient times, there was a custom called "worshipping the moon at dusk in autumn" — that is, paying homage to the moon goddess. Under the moonlight, a large incense table would be set up, with the moon deity statue placed facing the moon. Red candles burned bright, and offerings of mooncakes, watermelon, apples, red dates, plums, and grapes were arranged. The whole family would bow to the moon in turn, after which the matriarch would cut the reunion mooncake into pieces — one for each family member.

Beyond moon worship, admiring the full moon has been a Mid-Autumn tradition since ancient times. By the Zhou Dynasty, every Mid-Autumn night featured ceremonies to welcome the cold and worship the moon — a large incense table laden with food and wine, with people gathering to drink and gaze at the moon together.
