Diverse applications across different scenarios require different kinds of compute support; expanding total available compute power and improving computational efficiency can provide the foundation for continued AI development and the diffusion of advanced technologies. The road to general artificial intelligence is blocked by three "ceilings": the power wall, the memory wall, and the communication wall. Dai believes that through hardware-software co-design approaches, innovations like 3D-stacked packaging paradigms, and heterogeneous computing, these walls can be broken down — providing stronger compute support for AI, enabling performance breakthroughs, and serving broader populations.
