Tiejun Huang

Tiejun Huang is a Chinese AI researcher and academic administrator best known as a founding leader of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI, 智源研究院). As of 2025 he serves as the academy's chairman (理事长), having previously held the role of president (院长) since at least 2020, a position he held concurrently with his professorship at Peking University . In a 2025 speech, Huang described BAAI's success as built on three pillars: early bet on large models as "infrastructure for the intelligence era" (dating to BAAI's 2021 "Wudao" model release), a culture of putting young researchers in charge, and commitment to open-source ecosystems — the last earning BAAI a reputation as "the Whampoa Military Academy of China's large models" .
