Source Code Capital's Hongjiang Zhang Ranks No. 1 Among Chinese Mainland Scientists in Global Top 1000
In 2021, Hongjiang Zhang was ranked number one in mainland China among the world's top 1,000 computer scientists.
Recently, Guide2Research released its 2021 ranking of the world's top 1,000 computer scientists. Fifty-three Chinese scientists made the list, with Hongjiang Zhang, Investment Partner at Source Code Capital and Chairman of BAAI, ranking first among mainland Chinese scientists.
The 2021 top 1,000 list for computer science and electronics features 14 scientists who have won the Turing Award, the most prestigious honor in computer science, along with 273 ACM Fellows and 401 IEEE Fellows.
This marks the seventh edition of Guide2Research's annual ranking of top computer scientists, now in its sixth year. Fifty-three Chinese scientists were selected, with Hongjiang Zhang, Investment Partner at Source Code Capital and Chairman of BAAI, ranking first among mainland Chinese scientists — the seventh time Zhang has received this global scientific honor.
Zhang joined Kingsoft at the end of 2011 as Group Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, while also serving as CEO of Kingsoft Cloud and as a board member of Cheetah Mobile, Xunlei, and VNET Group. He retired from Kingsoft in December 2016, subsequently joining Source Code Capital as an Investment Partner and becoming Chairman of BAAI in 2018. Previously, Zhang served as Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Asia-Pacific R&D Group and President of Microsoft Asia Engineering Institute, as one of Microsoft's first ten "Distinguished Scientists," and as a founding member and Associate Managing Director of Microsoft Research Asia.

Zhang is an internationally renowned pioneer and thought leader in multimedia, and a Fellow of both ACM and IEEE. For his groundbreaking contributions to multimedia research, he received the 2010 IEEE Technical Achievement Award and the 2012 ACM SIGMM Technical Achievement Award. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to R&D and technology transfer, he was awarded the "Distinguished Asian American Engineer of the Year" in 2008. Zhang has published nearly 400 academic papers and holds nearly 200 international patents, making him one of the most influential scientists in international computer science.
Guide2Research reviewed the academic metrics of over 6,300 scientists worldwide to select the top 1,000. The ranking is based on Google Scholar H-index data collected through May 16, combined with DBLP and citation metrics (with an h-index threshold of ≥40).
Notably, the number of Chinese scholars on the list (41 from mainland China, 10 from Hong Kong, and 2 from Taiwan) has increased significantly compared to last year, when 45 scientists made the ranking.
In this year's top 1,000, 41 scientists from mainland China were selected. The top 10 are:

Beyond these ten scientists, other mainland researchers in the global top 1,000 include Zhengyou Zhang from Tencent (domestic rank 11 / international rank 240), Feiyue Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Automation (12/241), Wen Gao from Peking University (13/243), Liangpei Zhang from Wuhan University (14/275), Zhongming Liang from Shenzhen University (15/289), Toshio Fukuda from Beijing Institute of Technology (16/391), Yong Rui from Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group (22/574), Ya-Qin Zhang from Tsinghua University (27/613), and Qi Tian from Huawei (29/639).
