Biwei Huang

Biwei Huang is a causal AI researcher and founder-CEO of Aether AI, a startup building "causal world models" — AI that understands physical cause-and-effect rather than mere correlation — with embodied intelligence (robot "brains") as its first landing scenario. She is an assistant professor at UCSD's Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, following a path from East China Normal University's computer science program to the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, a PhD at CMU, and then UCSD — roughly 12 years spent on causal discovery and causal AI. Per a 九合创投 (Unity Ventures) piece, she has published over a hundred papers at venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, and CVPR, won an Apple Scholar award, and led development of the widely used open-source causal discovery tools Causal-Learn and Causal-Copilot; the same piece places her as the third-generation figure in a causal-AI lineage advised by Judea Pearl, Bernhard Schölkopf, Clark Glymour, and Peter Spirtes. Aether AI raised about $20 million in short order from top USD funds, and she has predicted a "GPT-3 moment" for robotic manipulation by early 2027, with autonomous open-environment exploration by late 2027.
