Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (北京智源人工智能研究院, or 智源研究院) is a Beijing-based AI research institute established in November 2018 under the "Beijing BAAI Action Plan," an initiative backed by China's Ministry of Science and Technology and the Beijing municipal government . Its founding mission centers on pushing frontier AI research—supporting scientists in exploring "unmanned zones" of AI science, driving breakthroughs in theory, methods, tools, and systems, and positioning Beijing as a global source of AI academic thought, top talent, and innovation policy .
BAAI operates as an open, collaborative platform. It was launched with support from leading Chinese AI organizations including Peking University, Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Baidu, Megvii, Meituan, Xiaomi, and ByteDance, and pursues four main tracks: an open AI service platform, joint laboratories for foundational research, global talent recruitment and training, and industry-academia exchange through events like the annual BAAI Conference . In recent years, BAAI has expanded its international footprint. In August 2025, it partnered with Hong Kong Investment Corporation (HKIC) to host the inaugural "AI Global Talent Summit" in Hong Kong, gathering over 350 AI experts and startup founders worldwide to advance cross-border talent flows and AI commercialization .
