Zexiang Li is a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology — he returned there in 1992 — and is best known as one of China's most successful engineer-turned-startup mentors . His reputation rests on a long roster of companies: DJI, incubated out of his classroom (he backed founder Tao Wang with critical early investment and student recruits when the team was falling apart), plus QKM (李群自动化) and ePropulsion from his 3126 lab, and Narwal and Hai Robotics out of XbotPark, the robotics base he chairs in Songshan Lake . Working alongside HKUST colleagues Bingqiang Gao and Jie Gan, he built an investment-and-incubation model around hardware founders; his more recent venture is the Innox academy in Shenzhen .
