xAI

xAI is Elon Musk's artificial-intelligence company, launched in July 2023 with the stated goal of "understanding the true nature of the universe" . Its founding team of 12 drew heavily from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research and Microsoft Research, with three members from each of the first three labs .

The company has pursued an aggressive infrastructure-first strategy: it built what was described as the world's largest fully connected H100 GPU cluster—10,000 chips online in 122 days, then doubled within 92 days—to train its Grok family of models . Grok 3 debuted in February 2025 with Musk claiming it would be "the smartest AI on Earth," and the company has since pushed into reasoning modes, deep search, voice interfaces and even an AI game studio . By mid-2025 Grok's mobile monthly active users had passed 20 million, with a further spike after the July 2025 Grok 4 release .

Yet xAI has also become a case study in the tension between Musk's manufacturing-style management and AI research culture. As of April 2026 reporting, roughly 90% of the early team had departed following a wave of executive exits, with Musk turning to SpaceX and Tesla engineers to fill the gaps—"rocket builders starting to build models," as one observer put it . The same source attributed the exodus to a lack of global planning, pulse-style deadlines and extreme work pressure rather than weak talent: "the team's combat effectiveness is very strong... but manufacturing management methods may not suit a large-model company" . Despite this, xAI's valuation trajectory has been steep; it merged into a $250 billion entity with SpaceX within roughly a year of its first fundraise, making billionaires of its 11 co-founders .
