Zhilin Yang is the founder of Moonshot AI and creator of the Kimi AI assistant . He was previously an assistant professor at Tsinghua University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences before leaving academia to start the company . In 暗涌Waves's 2023 reporting, investors described him as having "world-class scientist vision and a unique sense of smell for technical direction" . His background includes doctoral work at CMU under Apple AI lead Ruslan Salakhutdinov and Google AI chief scientist William W. Cohen .

Moonshot AI itself became a flashpoint in China's LLM funding wars: in early 2024 it raised a single round reportedly exceeding $1 billion at a $2.5 billion valuation, with Alibaba as a major backer—a deal in which former GSR Ventures partner Zhang Yutong played a critical intermediary role .
